lost tooth woman smiling An overwhelming number of Americans have missing teeth as adults, but we’re sure they didn’t think they would lose their teeth when they were younger. Many people have lost their natural teeth because they didn’t take care of them while they had them, taking their smile for granted.

Your dentist is here to warn you to take care of your natural permanent teeth now before you have to get false teeth to replace them!

Everyone Should Be Getting Dental Checkups & Cleanings

Keeping your regular dental appointments every six months dramatically improves overall health and oral health no matter how old you may be. That’s why it’s critical to choose a dental practice that offers preventive care services to patients of all ages, whether it’s a child, teen, adult, or matured family member.

This visual dental exam is used to spot issues like tooth decay, gum disease, teeth grinding, and oral cancer that an untrained eye may not notice. Your dentist should examine and/or use a dental x-ray to look at these things during your dental checkup:

  • oral tissues
  • your head and neck
  • and the innerworkings of your mouth

Right after your dental exam, you should receive a professional deep cleaning of all your teeth including small crevices and the gum line. The cleaning portion of the appointment isn’t many patients favorite part of their dental visit, but this is important because it helps patients avoid:

  • gum disease
  • tooth decay
  • cavities
  • abscessed teeth
  • other dental problems associated with dental bacteria

What else can a preventive care appointment do for me?

You can clearly see the difference between a dentist that completes dental care and a dentist that cares about executing exceptional dental care. A good dentist will go out of his way to practice preventive care so rather than just addressing dental problems as they come.

But, in the case that your oral health declines, your dentist is still here to help you recover. You should be able to discuss a variety of restorative care options that can help you revitalize your smile. Some restorative treatments may include:

  • Dental implants
  • Dental crowns and bridges
  • Complete dentures or partial dentures
  • Implant-supported dentures

If it’s been longer than 6 months since your last appointment, don’t stall anymore. It’s time to have your mouth and body cared for. Dental visits are your best defense against oral health issues and they can help you keep your natural teeth for years to come!
