What Causes Dental Anxiety?

It can be frustrating to have something like dental anxiety standing in the way of you and excellent oral health. Unfortunately, this reaction to visiting your dentist can be a result of several different causes that you may or may not be able to pinpoint, including:

  • A bad past experience.
  • A disability that keeps you from being comfortable in the treatment chair.
  • A strong gag reflex.
  • Not having control of the diagnoses or outcomes of treatments.
  • The sounds and sights in the office.
  • Feeling an invasion of personal space and privacy.

No matter why you experience these reactions, know that they are valid, and you should be able to visit a sedation dentist who will help you feel comfortable and heard when you see them for treatment.

Who Can Sedation Dentistry Help?

Our team offers a couple of different options to help patients who are suffering from mild to more moderate signs of dental anxiety. Our methods can help patients who experience some of the following symptoms when visiting the dentist:

  • Excessive sweating
  • Rapid heartrate
  • Have a difficult time sitting still
  • Sensitive gag reflex
  • A fear of needles
  • Suffer from complex dental issues

Oral Conscious Sedation

For patients with more severe anxiety and fear surrounding visiting the dentist, we offer oral conscious sedation, which is administered in the form of a single pill. Before your appointment, we’ll have you take the medication so the effects kick-in when you arrive. As soon as you reach our office, our friendly team will escort you back to one of our operatories and help you get comfortable in a treatment chair. Because the effects of oral conscious sedation can linger for several hours, you’ll need to be prepared to have someone pick you up from our office.

Nitrous Oxide Sedation

Nitrous oxide is a fast-acting, in-office method of sedation that’s more commonly known as laughing gas. To administer it, we’ll place a small nose mask on you that will allow you to easily breathe in a colorless, odorless gas. Nearly immediately, you feel a calming wave wash over you, allowing you to relax while you’re in the treatment chair. As soon as your treatment is complete, we’ll have you breathe oxygen, which will minimize the chances of having any side-effects from the sedation. Because the effects wear off quickly, you will be able to go about your day as you normally would following your appointment.
